Having minimal outside administration or leadership brings balance to the team. It is all too common in other school models to have an overabundance of managers, supervisors, and other administrators. Similar to how a country of self-governing individuals does not need to be managed, directed, or regulated, the culture and mindset of parents and students in the AFE setting do not require too much oversight.
In a service organization like a school, it is important to avoid compensating anyone who is not working towards the ultimate benefit of the students and their families. Compensation should be based on investment of time and effort. Most established schools systems have administrators (e.g., superintendent and school board) who appear to be doing little if anything to support the local group of students. The organization at AFE limits these positions and emphasizes the power of the parent. The Director oversees the “art” side of running a school and can oversee multiple locations. He/she maintains the integrity of the philosophy within the local groups he or she serves.
Keeping the local groups of families relatively small allows for little need for more than an administrator and a director. The director needs the biggest vision for how to serve the community. Because this little community has so many levels of connection, the director often finds ways to have the school better serve the community, including those outside of the student body. When the director is looking to add a new leader or teacher, they are looking for someone who has a passion for the subject and/or the students, has spiritual maturity, views leadership as service, and sufficient basic skills that would enable them to add value to the team. “Hire attitude. Train skill.”

Angie’s life mission is to provide educational opportunities for others,and she has spent the last 20 years preparing her heart and mind for this privilege. She has studied the Principle Approach from FACE (Foundation for American Christian Education), the educational philosophies of Oliver DeMille (Thomas Jefferson Education), Charlotte Mason, and Maria Montessori, in addition to studying the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, in an attempt to uncover true educational principles, methods, and practices. Within her own family, she has used a combination of home school, public and private school, co-ops, online classes, and mentors to reach her own children’s hearts and minds. American Family Education is a culmination of her passion, training and direct experiences with education in practice. She feels it both a duty and an honor to share with the community of Omaha the joy of faith-based, self-directed, leadership education.

Thomas and Cassandra Astle have the adorable story of knowing each other since birth. They were married in 2007 and have 3 boys. Cassandra has always had a heart for motherhood and education. She earned an AA in Professional Preschool Education, a BA in Child Development, and started on a masters in Special Education. She worked in the public school system for two years mainly as a K-3 special education teacher where she found her passion for inspiring children to have a love of learning. However, her frustration with public school politics and testing helped her choose to no longer pursue that route. Later, she ran an in home daycare/preschool from her home. After 3 1/2 years running that program and years of leadership education, it was time to pursue a bigger goal and start a school where children can learn and grow in their families, their faith, and as leaders in their community. Thomas is an extremely supportive husband who has his own passion for protecting our country through military service and through leadership education.
